After three years of lobbying for the release of over 300 mentally ill prisoners, Stand Up for Jamaica has partnered with Jamaicans for Justice to take legal action against the Government to force it to free the individuals.

The mentally ill prisoners, some of whom have been languishing in the system for decades, are being held without having gone to trial and without being sentenced.

Executive Director for the advocacy group, Carla Gullotta says four human rights attorneys have been retained to advance the cause of the prisoners.

Ms. Gullotta notes that an affidavit is being drafted to request the release of the mentally ill prisoners.
