West Indies batting legend Brian Lara calls for better medical care for Imran Khan

West indies batting legend Brian Lara has joined a growing list of former cricketers and experts calling for jailed Pakistan legend Imran Khan to receive proper medical care, saying the former captain deserves “compassion and dignity” as a human being.

The former Pakistan captain, now 73 year old has been incarcerated at Rawalpindi’s jail since 2023 following convictions in corruption cases. 

Lara, who faced imran four times during the West Indies’ tour of Pakistan in 1990, said he was struggling to understand how someone who had once been,  “a beacon of hope, pride and inspiration” for his country could now find himself without adequate care.

The 57-year-old lara urged authorities to ensure that imran receives independent medical attention, stressing that his appeal was not political.

Lara’s intervention comes after several prominent figures in cricket began speaking out over Imran’s treatment, and they include, India greats : Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, Australia’s Greg Chappell, Steve Waugh, Allan Border and Adam Gilchrist, and England former captains Alastair Cook, Michael Atherton and Nasser Hussain, 

In the meantime, Australia captain Pat Cummins has also publicly backed calls for an independent medical assessment and continued access for Imran’s family.
