JPS says it has been working on grid-hardening as part of efforts to make its systems more resilient
The Jamaica Public Service (JPS) says it has been working on grid-hardening as part of efforts to make its systems more resilient.
JPS’ Senior Vice President Ricardo Case says the company is applying the lessons learnt from Hurricane Melissa to develop its resilience.
The upcoming Atlantic Hurricane season begins on June 1.
Mr. Case explains that JPS has introduced technology to protect utility poles during high winds.
Mr. Case notes that all replacement poles are of higher class.
He said that while the aim is to replace all poles, it will not happen immediately due to the cost.
He was speaking during a panel discussion on the race to strengthen Jamaica’s utilities infrastructure before the next hurricane season.
Meanwhile, Mr. Case noted that about 76 customers remain without power following the passage of Hurricane Melissa last October.
