Vice President of the University and Allied Workers Union (UAWU), Clifton Grant has chastised the management of the University of the West Indies for the slow pace at which payment of outstanding compensation is made to staff.

Yesterday, some staff members staged another protest at the entrance to the university, expressing discontent over monies owed.

They had previously protested on Monday.

The workers pledged to continue the action if there is no favourable response from management.

There are fears that continued protests may adversely impact examinations next week.

Campus Registrar at UWI Mona, Dr. Donovan Stanberry, said the university is awaiting a recommendation from the Finance Ministry, regarding outstanding compensation for staff.

He said that a compensation study was completed and shared with unions representing staff, and that the unions’ responses, along with the review, were tabulated and shared with the Ministry of Finance.

Mr. Grant countered that the union made recommendations last year and since then, the matter remains unresolved.

Mr. Grant said the process needs to be expedited as the workers have been waiting for a very long time, for their pay out.

He said university management assured that a response will be given soon, but this assurance is not enough to abate the workers’ frustration.
