JUTC highlights notable increase in revenue collection
The state owned Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) says its seeing a notable increase in revenue collection, suggesting improved compliance with ticketing procedures and systems.
According to the JUTC, preliminary internal analysis indicates a notable increase in fare revenue collection in the days following recent arrests.
Nine drivers from various depots were arrested and charged between March 18, and March 26, in connection with offences relating to the alleged misappropriation of fares and failure to issue tickets to passengers.
A JUTC statement provides data indicating increased fare collection at three depots.
At the Portmore Depot, JUTC says in the week of March 12 to 18 it collected over $16.3 million and over $17.5 million during March 19 to 25, reflecting an increase of one point $2.3 million.
The bus company says at Spanish Town Depot over the same period, $14.23 million was collected in the first week and over $14.7 in the following week with fare collection increasing by over $482,000.
The JUTC points out that at the Rockfort Depot revenue increased by $619,771, further demonstrating improved compliance and strengthened revenue capture across the network.
The bus company states that these early indicators reinforce the importance of strong internal controls and ongoing monitoring to ensure accountability across all operations.
JUTC is also reminding commuters, of the importance of collecting tickets for all cash transactions conducted onboard buses.
It states that tickets serve as proof of payment and are critical in ensuring accountability within the system.
