Portmore close gap on leaders as Jamaica Premier League resumes after Hurricane Melissa
Portmore United closed the gap on leaders Montego Bay United to a single point after edging Arnett Gardens 1-0 as the Wray and Nephew Jamaica Premier League resumed on Sunday, following the disruption caused by Hurricane Melissa.
The former champions struck early at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex, benefiting from a fourth-minute own goal by Joel Jones. The end result proved enough to hand head coach Rodolph Austin and his Portmore unit all three points, lifting them to 21.
Racing United also strengthened their top-three position, moving to 18 points after a hard-fought 3-2 win over Molynes United — their fifth victory of the campaign. Tajay Grant led the charge with a brace, while Chavany Willis added the other. Marlon Pennicooke kept Molynes in the contest with two goals of his own.
At the Harbour Mini Stadium, Harbour View delivered the day’s most commanding performance, sweeping aside newly promoted Spanish Town Police 5-2. The result marked a winning start for new head coach Vassell Reynolds and propelled the Stars of the East to seventh place on 12 points.
Elsewhere, newly crowned Caribbean champions Mount Pleasant battled to a 0-0 draw away to Dunbeholden. The result pushed Mount Pleasant up to eighth, and with four games in hand.
Attention now shifts to Monday night’s double-header at Stadium East. Defending champions Cavalier face leaders Montego Bay United at 5:00 p.m., before Tivoli Gardens and Waterhouse square off at 7:30. Both teams enter the late game on 12 points, with Waterhouse holding fifth place by virtue of goal difference.
