Reggae Boyz on course for potential World Cup showdown with Ronaldo’s Portugal

Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz could be staring at a blockbuster opening fixture against former European champions Portugal, led by global superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, should they advance to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The possibility emerged following the official draw for the expanded 48-team tournament, which confirmed that the winner of Pathway One in the Inter-Confederation Playoffs — a route that includes Jamaica — will slot into Group K alongside Portugal, Uzbekistan and Colombia.

To secure their place at the showpiece event, the Reggae Boyz must first overcome New Caledonia in their playoff clash on March 26, before facing the Democratic Republic of Congo in the decisive final on March 31 in Guadalajara, Mexico. Victory in both matches would see Jamaica clinch World Cup qualification for the first time since France 1998.

If they advance, the Reggae Boyz would open their campaign on June 17 against Portugal at NRG Stadium in Houston — a fixture that could pit Jamaican defenders against one of the most iconic goal scorers in football history.

The team would remain in Houston for their second group match against Colombia on June 23, before closing out the opening phase against Uzbekistan on June 27 at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, is set to run from June 11 to July 19 and will feature a record number of participating nations.
