Labour Ministry commits to ensuring rights of Bahia Principe hotel workers are upheld
The Ministry of Labour says it is committed to ensuring that the rights and welfare of workers of the Bahia Principe hotels in St. Ann are upheld following an announcement of the indefinite closure of the hotels.
The hotel, in a letter to staff on November 15, 2025 said the Bahia Principe Grand Jamaica and Bahia Principe Luxury Runaway Bay resorts in St. Ann would be closed indefinitely and that it would commence redundancy exercises.
This led to a call from the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU) which represents the workers, for the Labour Ministry to intervene.
According to the BITU the hotel made the decision despite active discussions and without any conclusion to the process.
In a release yesterday, the Ministry of Labour said it remains committed to facilitating constructive engagement between the parties while exploring available options to mitigate any adverse employment impact.
It said it will continue to monitor developments closely and advise that no definitive conclusions should be drawn until discussions have been completed.
The ministry said in keeping with its mandate to promote and safeguard harmonious labour and industrial relations across Jamaica, it has written to the hotel’s management, inviting them and their representatives to a conciliatory meeting on Monday, November 24, to discuss the union’s concerns and the way forward, in accordance with established industrial relations best practices.
