Additional field hospitals to be set up in western Jamaica in the coming days

Additional field hospitals are to be set up in western Jamaica in the coming days.

This after category 5 Hurricane Melissa damaged hospitals in Trelawny, St. James, Westmoreland and St. Elizabeth.

The first field hospital was established in Black River, St. Elizabeth and has seen over 50 patients since it became operational yesterday.

The second such facility which was donated by the Spanish Government is being deployed to Falmouth, Trelawny.

A deployment ceremony for that hospital will be held tomorrow.

Speaking at a press briefing this morning, Minister of Health Dr. Christopher Tufton said the facility will be staffed by some 80 Spanish healthcare professionals.

He said the team arrived yesterday.

The Minister said a third field hospital will be set up at the Cornwall Regional Hospital in St. James.

That 24 to 30 bed field hospital is being provided by the Government of Barbados.

Dr. Tufton also informed that a field health centre is to be established in white house, Westmoreland, in collaboration with Samaritan’s purse, to serve persons who are unable to get to Savanna-la-Mar.
