Residents in Waterloo Manchester remain unsure how they will move forward, after damage caused by Hurricane Melissa

Thousands of Jamaicans remain unsure how they will move forward, after Hurricane Melissa caused both infrastructure and emotional damage.

Georgetta Williams has been speaking with residents of Waterloo in Manchester, one of the areas battered by the hurricane.

Waterloo is located about 15 miles from Mile Gully’s town centre.

Up to 5 days after the system, light poles were hanging across the street and debris remained on roadways.

In this community, most of the houses had zinc roofs, these were destroyed or damaged by Hurricane Melissa.

There are several damaged buildings including the primary school and shops.

Waterloo is also a farming community, many of the crops planted by residents are now on the ground among them banana, coconut, pear and fruit trees .

For the residents, the category 5 system which made landfall last Tuesday was a nightmare, some explained that they narrowly escaped death from Melissa which caused damage or destroyed several communities across the island.

Many residents of Waterloo said they did not evacuate their homes, because the community is not a flood-prone area.

But flooding was only one of the dangerous elements Melissa brought with it, as strong winds and an errie whistle left many scared.

One woman told IRIE FM News that when the wind removed her roof, she had to run through the storm with her 2 month old grandson to seek shelter.

She said her children are traumatized.

Another resident said she lost everything during the hurricane. She is now trying to pick up the pieces.

According to another resident, the force of the water broke her window. She grabbed what she believed were her two children and rushed out of the room.

However, when she got outside she had only one child.

She said her sister later got her daughter out of the room.

Meanwhile, another resident said help is needed in the community, however, they are still trying to help themselves as they need a roof over their heads.
