Opposition warns that Jamaica is at risk of a public health crisis following the passage of Hurricane Melissa
Opposition Spokesperson on Health and Wellness Dr. Alfred Dawes says the country is at risk of a public health crisis following the passage of Hurricane Melissa.
The Category 5 hurricane caused flooding and significant damage across the island, especially in western parishes.
Speaking at a People’s National Party press conference yesterday, Dr. Dawes pointed out that the settling of water will increase the mosquito population.
He said this could lead to outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases such as Dengue and Chik-v.
He also noted that dead animals in floodwaters could lead to contamination and an increase in gastroenteritis cases.
Dr. Dawes emphasized that measures, including regular water testing and treatment, are paramount.
