West Indies create history in dramatic Super Over win against Bangladesh

The West Indies produced a thrilling finish to level their three-match One Day International series against Bangladesh at one-all, pulling off a narrow Super Over victory in the second ODI at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Tuesday.

After both teams finished with identical totals of 213, the contest went to a Super Over — where the visitors edged home by a single run to complete a remarkable turnaround and set up a series decider.

The West Indies, replying to Bangladesh’s 213 for 7, were restricted to 213 for 9 from their 50 overs, with captain Shai Hope leading from the front with an unbeaten 53. He received support from Keacy Carty (35) and Alick Athanaze (28) in what proved a tense chase against a disciplined home attack.

Rishad Hossain was Bangladesh’s most effective bowler, finishing with 3 for 42, while Nasum Ahmed and Tanvir Islam picked up two wickets each.

Earlier, the West Indies made history by becoming the first team ever to bowl 50 overs of spin in a One Day International. Bangladesh, after winning the toss and electing to bat, were held to 213 for 7 — their total built around Soumya Sarkar’s 45, and an unbroken 50-run eighth-wicket partnership between Rishad Hossain (39 not out) and captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz (32).

Gudakesh Motie led the West Indies’ all-spin attack with 3 for 65, while Alick Athanaze (2 for 14) and Akeal Hosein (2 for 41) also made key contributions.

In the Super Over, the Windies batted first and managed 10 for 1, before Akeal Hosein — who had only joined the squad hours earlier — held his nerve to restrict Bangladesh to 9 for 1, sealing a dramatic one-run win.

Hosein’s heroics were all the more impressive given his last-minute call-up. The left-arm spinner arrived at the team hotel at 4 a.m. on match day, having been drafted in alongside Ramon Simmonds as a late replacement for Shamar Joseph and Jediah Blades.

Blades has been ruled out of both the Bangladesh series and the upcoming tour of New Zealand due to a stress fracture of the lower back, while Joseph is nursing a shoulder injury and will consult a specialist in England to begin rehabilitation.

The third and final ODI between the two teams takes place on Thursday, with the series finely poised at 1-1 after a contest that will be remembered for its drama and the West Indies’ spin-bowling milestone.
