JCC calls for stakeholders to provide greater support to persons struggling with mental health issues
The Jamaica Council of Churches (JCC) is calling for greater collaboration amongst stakeholders to support citizens who are facing mental health challenges.
JCC General Secretary Reverend Newton Dixon says Jamaica’s mental health situation is seemingly worsening.
In recent times there have been several reports of suicides.
One of the latest suspected incident occurred at the University of the West Indies Mona Campus.
A female student was found dead this morning.
A police man is also suspected to have committed suicide at his home in St. Elizabeth yesterday.
He has been identified as Constable Arnold Wilson.
In expressing condolences and deep concern at the incidents, Reverend Dixon said stakeholders can do more to offer support to citizens.
Noting that the JCC sympathizes with the victims’ families the clergy man said churches must employ stronger strategies to help citizens.
Reverend Dixon said a national day of prayer for persons who are struggling mentally is a good initiative.
He further called for a focus within weekly church services to highlight support for mental health.
