Psychologist urges use of online monitoring to find individuals who display suicidal tendencies
The authorities are being urged to apply the same monitoring strategies used to locate persons who make criminal or offensive remarks online, to find individuals who display suicidal tendencies.
The appeal was made by psychologist Dr. Leahcim Semaj during an interview with IRIE FM News yesterday.
His statement follows several recent suicides.
Forty-four people have taken their lives since the start of the year.
The Jamaica Constabulary Force said while this is nine fewer than the 53 recorded between January and September 2024, the last three months have seen a worrying trend.
July 2025 recorded eight suicides, a 33% increase over July 2024, while August and September rose by 20% and 25% respectively, compared with the same months last year.
One of the latest victims was 26-year-old accountant and beauty pageant contestant, Tyra Spaulding.
She was found dead at her St. Andrew home on September 23.
Prior to her death, Ms. Spaulding posted several videos on YouTube in which she expressed suicidal thoughts.
Dr. Semaj said it is important that social media be patrolled to find individuals in need of help.
He is urging persons with mental health issues to seek help.
