Steps being taken to address pork price concerns – Agriculture Minister
Agriculture Minister Floyd Green says steps are being taken to address concerns about the price of pork.
Local pig farmers have complained that they are unable to make a decent earning because pork is being sold at a low price.
The matter was raised at the recent Annual General Meeting of the Jamaica Pig Farmers Association.
Speaking to the farmers, Mr. Green said this issue is due to a glut in the local market and not imports.
The minister said the steps being taken to address the concern include training pig farmers to have a better understanding of the market.
Mr. Green pointed out that Jamaica only allows the importation of pig tails and bellies.
He said in instances where prime pork is imported illegally, the relevant authority is alerted and the persons involved are prosecuted.
Mr. Green explained that unregistered pig farmers tend to be the ones who sell their pork at cheap prices which affects farm gate costs.
He urged registered pig farmers to be more organised and seek markets for their products to reduce the glut.
