JFJ renews call for mandatory use of body-worn cameras by security forces, wants update from Police Commissioner about procurement
Lobby group Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ) is renewing its call for the mandatory use of body-worn cameras by members of the security forces.
Discussions about the cameras resurfaced following the fatal shooting of a man in Cherry Tree Lane, Clarendon, last Monday, September 15.
Police say Jamar Farquharson of Four Paths, Clarendon, was killed during an alleged confrontation with lawmen.
A 9mm pistol was reportedly seized during the incident.
A video of what is said to be a recording of the incident is circulating on social media.
In the video, a man who is believed to be Farquharson is seen unarmed, holding both hands in the air in the presence of armed police officers.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched a probe into the matter.
Reacting to the situation, JFJ’s Executive Director, Mickel Jackson, said it raises serious concerns about police conduct and accountability.
She also said the matter raises several questions which must be answered.
Ms. Jackson is also calling on Police Commissioner Dr. Kevin Blake to provide an update on the procurement of the body-worn cameras for officers.
