Two men are in custody following the seizure of more than 1900 pounds of ganja during an operation in Dumfries, St. Thomas last night.
The illicit drug has an estimated street value of $5.7 million.
Reports are that about 11 PM, personnel from the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division (FNID) carried out an operation at a beach in Dumfries where two men were seen with a quantity of knitted bags.
The men were accosted and a search of the bags revealed the compressed ganja.
One boat affixed with two 75 hp engines was also seized.
The illicit drug has an estimated street value of $5.7 million.
The two men were taken into custody. Their identities are being withheld pending further investigations.
Acting Director of FNID, Superintendent Oral Henry emphasises the implications of the seizure.
He points out that the proceeds from these drugs are often used to purchase illegal firearms, which are then trafficked into Jamaica.
Superintendent Henry says by disrupting this operation, the police have not only prevented a significant amount of drugs from reaching their destination, but have also cut off a key financial pipeline for criminal gangs.
He says the sustained efforts, with the help of partners are crucial in intercepting criminal activities,.
This is the second major ganja seizure in recent days.
Two men were taken into custody following the discovery of a two-acre unlicensed ganja farm in Annotto Bay, St. Mary.
The bust was made during a targeted police operation last Thursday, September 18.
The public is reminded to report illegal firearms and narcotics by contacting FNID at 876-923- 6184, the National Intelligence Bureau at 811, Crime Stop at 311 or the nearest police station.
