Medal-less Day 3 for Jamaica at World Athletics Championships

Defending champion Danielle Williams was unable to deliver another golden moment today, leaving Jamaica without a medal on Day 3 of the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

Williams, who carried the nation’s hopes as the lone Jamaican in a medal event, stumbled at the third hurdle in the women’s 100 metres hurdles final and never recovered her rhythm, eventually crossing the line in seventh place with a time of 12.53 seconds.

Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji produced the performance of her career, storming to victory in a national record 12.24 seconds. Jamaica’s national record holder Ackera Nugent had earlier fallen short of the final, finishing third in her semi-final in 12.63 seconds.

Despite the disappointment in the hurdles, there was progress elsewhere for Jamaica. Former world champion Tajay Gayle led all qualifiers into the men’s long jump final with a leap of 8.28 metres, while compatriot Nikaoli Williams also advanced, his effort of 8.15 metres ranking him fourth best overall.

In the women’s 400 metres hurdles, Andrenette Knight looked sharp, finishing second in her heat in 53.74 seconds behind American Anna Cockrell (53.63). Knight’s time was good enough to place her third fastest overall heading into the semi-finals, just ahead of reigning world champion Femke Bol of the Netherlands (53.75). Teammate Shiann Salmon also booked her spot in the next round.

The men’s 400 metres hurdles saw Jamaica secure two more semi-final berths. Malik James-King clocked a season-best 48.27 seconds, while Roshawn Clark scraped through in 48.83, nearly squandering his chance with a late lapse in form.

Meanwhile, Jamaica’s presence remains strong in the men’s 110 metres hurdles as Orlando Bennett (13.20), Demario Prince (13.31), and Tyler Mason — who posted the fastest qualifying time of 13.17 — all advanced to the semi-finals.

At the close of Day 3, Jamaica remains with three medals — one gold and two silver — slipping to fourth on the medal table as the championships continue.
