Clayton chases wild card spot at Zurich Diamond League Finale
Olympic finalist Tia Clayton will get one last opportunity to punch her ticket to next month’s World Championships in Tokyo when she lines up at the prestigious Zurich Weltklasse Diamond League finale tomorrow and Thursday.
Clayton heads into the meet brimming with confidence after clocking a personal best of 10.82 seconds to finish second at the Silesia Diamond League. On that occasion, she was beaten only by world leader Melissa Jefferson Wooden of the United States, who stopped the clock at 10.66.
The former Edwin Allen High speedster will face another stern test in Zurich with seasoned Ivorian star Marie-Josée Ta Lou Smith and American Jacious Sears also confirmed for the women’s 100 metres.
The two-day finale will feature 12 Jamaicans across track and field. Action gets underway on Wednesday with Rajindra Campbell, who boasts a season’s best of 22.04 metres in the shot put, while Carey McLeod and Wayne Pinnock will carry the country’s hopes in the men’s long jump.
Thursday’s line-up will see sprint hurdlers Ackera Nugent, Danielle Williams, and Orlando Bennett competing, alongside 400-metre hurdler Andrenette Knight and sprinter Akeem Blake.
In the field, Olympic silver medallist Shanieka Ricketts will contest the women’s triple jump, Jordan Scott the men’s equivalent while Romaine Beckford Beckford will feature in the men’s high jump.
