West Indies Women embark on groundbreaking development camp in India

Fifteen of the Caribbean’s most promising female cricketers are currently in India for a two-week specialized training camp at the Chennai Super Kings Academy, as Cricket West Indies (CWI) expands its groundbreaking India development program to include women.

The contingent, led by head coach Merissa Aguilleira, along with assistant coaches Ryan Hinds and Tremayne Smartt, and team manager Yasmine St Ange, departed Barbados on August 12 ahead of the program.

The 15-member squad features several players already capped at the senior international level, including Ashmini Munisar, Zaida James, Djenaba Joseph, Jahzara Claxton, Jannillea Glasgow, Realeanna Grimmond, Trishan Holder, Mandy Mangru, and Nerissa Crafton.

They are joined by a talented group of current and former West Indies Under-19 stars: Naijanni Cumberbatch, Niya Latchman, Samara Ramnath, Shunelle Sawh, Steffie Soogrim, and Selena Ross.

While in India, the players will undergo specialized training sessions and practice matches designed to sharpen their ability to play spin bowling in subcontinental conditions. The program will place strong emphasis on technical development, mental conditioning, and cultural adaptation.

Importantly, the group will also work with the same world-class coaching staff that guided the male contingent earlier this year, including Academy Director Sriram Krishnamurthy and his team of experts.

The comprehensive two-week program, that got underway on August 13, runs until August 30.
