PPV operators restive as upcoming election puts unresolved issues on hold

Public passenger vehicle operators are reportedly upset and restive as they have been left in limbo, as it relates to several issues affecting the sector.

This as they have been put in a wait and see mode on if or when the issues will be addressed, because of the upcoming general election.

The taxi and tour bus operators met with Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness and transport minister Daryl Vaz on Thursday.

In a social media post, Dr. Holness said he has great respect for taxi operators, as well as a very good understanding of the taxi business.

He said the meeting with representatives of various taxi associations afforded an opportunity to discuss their concerns and share the government’s plans for the sector.

President of the Transport Operators Development Sustainable Services (TODSS) Egeton Newman noted that, while the issues were ventilated at the meeting, the operators were not convinced that any action will be taken now to resolve them.

This as they were given the impression that any effort at resolution is pending the outcome of the September 3 election.

Newman said among the issues that need to be settled is the outstanding fare increase.

Another issue is the planned islandwide roll out of Jamaica Urban Transit Company busses.

Newman pointed out that tour bus operators have expressed concern about their charter service earnings being eroded by the JUTC.
