Romelda Aiken-George bids farewell to club netball after historic 18-season career

Jamaican netball legend Romelda Aiken-George has officially called time on her illustrious club career, bringing the curtain down on 18 remarkable seasons and 245 elite-level games following her final appearance for the Adelaide Thunderbirds in the Suncorp Super Netball League semi-final on Sunday, July 20.

The veteran Sunshine Girls goal-shooter, widely regarded as one of the greatest to ever grace the court, made her international debut in 2005 before launching her professional club career in 2008 with the Queensland Firebirds, where she spent 14 seasons, leading the franchise to three Premiership titles and earning three league MVP awards.

In 2023, she signed with the NSW Swifts, playing a key role in helping the team reach the Grand Final. A year later, she joined the Thunderbirds, where she not only took charge of the shooting circle but also led the team to a Grand Final victory, earning Most Valuable Player honors in the process.

Despite her enduring passion for the sport, Aiken-George admitted that the decision to step away was largely influenced by the toll that years of top-level play had taken on her body.

“Right now, I am feeling somewhat sad, but the body is just like ‘let’s take a time out’ but I think my mind is saying ‘yeah we can do it,” Aiken-George said, reflecting on the emotional decision to retire.

She also acknowledged the support she received from fellow Jamaican teammates during her time in Adelaide.

“To have spent the past two years at the Thunderbirds, it’s been amazing to play with this group and I’m so grateful that my career crossed paths with Shamera (Sterling-Humphrey) and Latanya (Wilson) in particular,” she added.

“To have played in this competition for so long before any other Jamaicans joined, it’s extra special for me to have had these years playing with them and living with them too.”

Aiken-George in Round 3 of the 2025 season became the most-capped player across the ANZ Championship and Suncorp Super Netball competitions, surpassing English legend Geva Mentor with 233 appearances. Just five rounds later, she became only the second player to score 9,000 national league goals, joining her Sunshine Girls teammate and fellow Jamaican great Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard.

It is unclear if Aiken-George will continue to represent Jamaica.
