Bold new chapter for Jamaica’s National Stadium
The National Stadium in Kingston is set to undergo a grand transformation, with construction on a state-of-the-art facility scheduled to begin in 2026 and full completion anticipated by 2029.
The ambitious redevelopment was unveiled during a press conference hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport. Leading the design is UK-based firm Ryder Architecture, represented by Director Johnathan Seebacher, who described the project as a vision that celebrates both “place and people.”
“It’s a real privilege,” said Seebacher. “From day one, we’ve been welcomed warmly by all our Jamaican partners. It’s a tremendous honour to work on a project of this magnitude, especially one so deeply rooted in Jamaica’s cultural and sporting heritage.”
Ryder Architecture is partnering with global consultancy CAA ICON, known for its work on premier sports and entertainment venues worldwide. Together, the two firms are spearheading the comprehensive redevelopment of the National Stadium as part of a broader plan to modernize the entire Independence Park complex.
Once completed, the new National Stadium will emerge as a world-class, fully compliant venue capable of hosting international athletics, football events, and major concerts. Key features of the redevelopment include:
- Seating for 37,500 spectators for sporting events, expandable to 50,000 for concerts.
- 90% roof coverage, providing essential shade and weather protection to enhance comfort and boost year-round attendance.
- 30 cutting-edge VIP boxes, two premium lounges, and upgraded corporate hospitality areas.
- Specialized zones: A football-focused West Stand and an athletics-focused East Stand, each equipped with modern gyms, warm-up zones, and anti-doping facilities.
One of the project’s most striking design elements is the preservation and modernization of the existing West Stand, a culturally and architecturally significant part of the current stadium. The new structure will be built around it, blending contemporary design with heritage preservation.

Beyond the stadium itself, the redevelopment promises to revitalize the surrounding public spaces. A new Fan Boulevard will offer a lively, pedestrian-friendly spine filled with bars, pop-up shops, entertainment areas, and event-day attractions—all aimed at creating a vibrant, engaging experience from the moment fans arrive.
Architectural renderings reveal a sleek, modern facility integrated with fan plazas, accessible restrooms, and improved concession areas—designed to meet the highest global standards of safety, comfort, and accessibility.
The project is currently in the feasibility phase, set to conclude in August. This stage includes financial and tourism impact assessments led by CAA ICON, benchmarking against global standards to ensure the stadium delivers long-term value for Jamaica.

Detailed design work will begin in September 2025, with construction starting in 2026.
Looking ahead, Phase One of the stadium redevelopment could be the spark for a larger master plan for Independence Park. Future phases may include:
- A world-class sports museum honoring Jamaica’s legendary athletic achievements.
- Upgraded facilities at Stadium East and the throws area.
- Improved parking and transportation access, designed for safety and efficiency.
