Transport Minister Daryl Vaz says the recently announced changes to Jamaica’s motor-vehicle registration and fitness certification processes will be delayed by a week.

He had said the validity periods for motor-vehicle registration and fitness certificates would have been extended effective July 1.

His initial statement followed Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness’ announcement of the changes during his contribution to the budget debate in March.

The changes will see brand-new vehicle owners being issued fitness certificates with a validity period of 5 years.

For used vehicles less than 10 years old, the certificate will be valid for 3 years.

While for vehicles older than 10 years, the annual renewal process will remain.

Vehicle registration will now have an option for two years, in addition to the options for six months and a year that currently exist.

Speaking with IRIE FM News yesterday, Mr. Vaz said the legislation process will result in a 7-day delay.
