Mario Deane’s ‘mi no like police’ comment was basis on which cops at lockup where he was beaten committed misconduct in public office -DPP
Mario Deane’s comment that ‘mi no like police’ was reportedly the basis on which lawmen on duty at the time he was attacked committed misconduct in a public office.
Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewellyn said the cops erred when, instead of processing Deane’s bail, they turned away his surety and left him in a cell with detainees who beat him.
Speaking at the Jamaica Civil Service Association’s Annual General Meeting, Llewellyn noted that in the Deane case, the prosecution had to prove to the court that the cops committed misconduct in a public office.
She explained that the police officers on duty did nothing when Deane was being attacked.
She noted that as public servants, the cops should not have been so thin-skinned.
She said the poor customer service by the police officers exemplified misconduct.
In August 2014, Deane was arrested on ganja-related charges, then beaten by other detainees at the Barnett Street police lock-up in St James, and later died at hospital.
Constables Juliana Clevon and Marlon Grant, as well as Corporal Elaine Stewart, were recently convicted on several charges stemming from Deane’s death.
They will be sentenced on July 1.
