Opposition PNP issues ultimatum to governing JLP to rescind appointment of Dennis Chung as Chief Technical Director of FID
The opposition People’s National party (PNP) has given the governing labour party, JLP, 72 hours to rescind the appointment of Dennis Chung as Chief Technical Director of the Financial Investigations Division (FID).
Mr. Chung’s appointment which was announced by the Finance Ministry yesterday, takes effect next Monday, June 2.
The PNP says this is a conflict of interest, as Mr. Chung has made public pronouncements on cases which are being investigated by the FID.
One such case relates to Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness’ finances.
Last year, the Integrity Commission determined that no charge should be laid against Dr. Holness in relation to alleged reports of statutory declaration breaches, but referred the matter to the FID to be probed.
Speaking at a PNP press conference today, Opposition Leader Mark Golding said Mr. Chung, prior to his appointment to the FID, commented on that matter in the public domain and is therefore unfit to assume the post due to possible conflict of interest.
The party’s General Secretary Dr. Dayton Campbell said if the appointment is not rescinded within 72 hours, actions will be taken.
The Opposition noted that it is considering legal action.
