Defending Champions Fairfield and former two-time winners South Stars set sights on SDC National Community T20 Title
The SDC National Community T20 Cricket Competition is off to a thrilling start as defending champions Fairfield United and former two-time winners South Stars both made commanding statements on Sunday at the French Park Oval in Manchester.
The parish phase, shortened to a brisk 10 overs per side for the opening round, saw Fairfield win the toss and elect to bat first against Providence. The defending champs posted a strong total of 130 for 5, paced by an aggressive 38 from Jamaine Morgan. Morgan’s partnership with Javed Williams, who contributed a quick 14 before a run out, laid a solid foundation with a 48-run opening stand. Roshaun McKenzie (23) and Taggroy Walker (22* not out) continued the momentum, ensuring Fairfield’s innings ended on a high note.
Providence struggled in response, bundled out for just 35 runs with Boris Edwards shining for the visitors, taking 2 wickets for 22 runs. Fairfield’s emphatic 95-run victory underlined their intent to defend their crown.
South Stars, too, dominated their match against Mandeville Peace Keepers. The Peace Keepers managed a modest 42 for 4, but the South Stars chased the target comfortably, reaching 43 for 1 in just 3.4 overs. Rushane Allen’s quickfire 21 laid the foundation in the nine-wicket triumph, signalling the team’s readiness to contend this season.
Earlier in the opening game of the quadruple header, Comfort showcased their own prowess in a 32-run win over Marcus Garvey. Opting to bat first, Comfort posted 97 for 7, thanks to notable contributions from Mathew Morgan (23), Lorenzo McDonald (24), Kelon Jones (20), and Zidane Gordon (17). In reply, Marcus Garvey fell short at 65 for 6, with only Nashane Meade (31*) and Rojae Williams (12) reaching double figures. Kelon Jones spearheaded Comfort’s bowling with an impressive 3 wickets for 9 runs.
The day’s action also featured French Park’s commanding performance against Broad Leaf. Odaine Thomas led the way with an unbeaten 65 as French Park amassed a competitive 145 for 2. Broad Leaf could muster only 84 for 5, falling short by 61 runs. Onique Robinson’s tight bowling, claiming 2 wickets for just 7 runs, played a crucial role in securing the win for the home side.
