Sunshine Girls standouts shine bright in Round 5 of Suncorp Super Netball League

Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard and Romelda Aiken-George, both standouts for the Sunshine Girls, delivered sensational performances in Round 5 of the Suncorp Super Netball League, leading their respective teams to dominant victories in Australia.

Fowler-Nembhard, the former five-time MVP, was in imperious form as she helped the West Coast Fever to a commanding 78-61 win over the Melbourne Mavericks at RAC Arena in Perth. The Jamaican shooting star scored an impressive 60 goals from 61 attempts, a season-high for the Fever, and also grabbed 3 offensive rebounds.

Her efforts were complemented by Goal Attack Shanice Beckford, who was also exceptional, sinking 6 of 7 shots and contributing 8 goal assists. On the defensive end, Kadie-Ann Dehaney stood out, tallying 3 gains and an intercept to add to the Fever’s well-rounded performance.

For the Melbourne Mavericks, star Jamaican shooter Shimona Jok led her team with a team-high 40 goals and 4 rebounds. Despite Jok’s best efforts, the Mavericks couldn’t overcome the Fever’s firepower, leaving them to settle for the defeat.

The win marked a significant turnaround for the West Coast Fever, who had started the season with back-to-back losses. Since the return of Fowler-Nembhard to the starting line-up, the Fever have strung together three consecutive wins, moving up to third on goal percentage with both them and the Adelaide Thunderbirds, two-time defending champions, sitting on 12 points.

In another thrilling encounter, Romelda Aiken-George was a standout performer for the Adelaide Thunderbirds as they defeated the Queensland Firebirds 62-53 on the road. Aiken-George scored a team-high 34 goals from 46 attempts, and also contributed 3 goal assists and 7 rebounds.

Defensively, Aiken-George’s teammate Latanya Wilson made her presence felt with 6 intercepts, 4 rebounds, and 10 gains, further solidifying the Thunderbirds’ all-around performance.

As the competition continues, the spotlight will shift to Sunday’s match-ups, with Jodi-Ann Ward suiting up for Giants Netball against Sunshine Coast Lightning, and the undefeated league leaders, NSW Swifts, taking on the Melbourne Vixens.
