World’s top athletes set to compete in inaugural Grand Slam Track competition in Kingston
The National Stadium will be buzzing with excitement as some of the world’s best runners prepare to take center stage in the first meet of the highly anticipated inaugural Grand Slam Track season.
The brand-new event marks the official start of the outdoor season and promises to be a thrilling showcase of world-class athleticism, with a star-studded line-up of Olympic and World Championship medallists competing in a tightly packed four-meet series stretching from April to June.
Among the athletes gracing the track are Rio 2016 Olympic 110-meter hurdles champion Omar McLeod and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, the reigning Olympic 400-meter hurdles champion from Paris.
McLeod is part of a group of 18 Jamaican athletes who will compete in the three-day event, which is expected to feature some of the largest prize money payouts in the sport. Grand Slam Track will see runners divided into six race groups, with each group consisting of two distinct race distances. Athletes will compete in both races within their assigned group, accumulating points to determine the overall winner.
The athlete with the highest combined score from both races in each group will be crowned the Grand Slam champion, earning a whopping $100,000. The prize pool extends all the way to eighth place, with $10,000 awarded to the runner-up, ensuring fierce competition throughout the weekend.
Exciting match-ups are set to unfold across the competition, including an exceptional line-up of Jamaican stars. Oblique Seville, Nickisha Pryce, Akeera Nugent, Roshaun Clarke, and Rushell Clayton are among the 48 athletes contracted as GST Racers to compete in all four Grand Slam events. Meanwhile, Jodean Williams, Zandrion Barnes, Omar McLeod, Assinie Wilson, and several other top-tier runners are have been signed as GST Challengers.
The action kicks off today at 5:42 PM with the women’s 200 metres, where local athletes Nickisha Pryce and Stacy Ann Williams will face off against a loaded field, including reigning Olympic 200m champion Gabby Thomas, Olympic 400m champion Marileidy Paulino, former world 400m champion Salwa Eid Naser, and former world 200m champion Dina Asher-Smith.
The opening day of competition also includes events such as the men’s 400m, women’s 3000m, women’s 800m, men’s and women’s 400 meters hurdles, men’s 5000m, and the grand finale of the day—the men’s 100m, set to close the show at 7:21 PM.
