PNP files law suit against Portmore parish status bill
The Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) has filed a lawsuit in the constitutional court to strike down the bill to make Portmore Jamaica’s 15th parish.
The bill was passed in both the upper and lower houses of parliament.
The PNP says the move is unconstitutional and will give the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) a political advantage, among other things.
It had vowed to take legal action on the matter, as well as to take protest action in the streets, if the bill becomes law.
Making his contribution to the budget debate this afternoon, Opposition Leader and PNP President Mark Golding said his party filed a lawsuit yesterday, to strike down the bill.
He also expressed concern that Jamaica’s democracy is at risk as the governing JLP continues to state that the PNP should not be allowed back in power.
