Export expansion one of strategic priorities of Agriculture/Fisheries Ministry; more reductions soon in onion import bill
The Agriculture and Fisheries Ministry says export expansion is one of its strategic priorities to ensure growth in the industry.
Portfolio Minister, Floyd Green made the comment during yesterday’s sitting of the Standing Finance Committee.
Mr. Green explained that crops such as Yam, Mango, Ackee and Sweet Potato are among the key drivers of the Ministry’s export expansion plan.
He said efforts are therefore being made to increase the production of these crops.
Mr. Green also noted that his Ministry will be seeking to use several fisheries products other than conch and lobster to drive export expansion within the sector.
Meanwhile, Mr. Green said plans are ongoing to facilitate a further decline in the sector’s import bill.
He pointed to the decline in onion imports, with further reductions expected this year.
