Jomel Warrican named ICC Men’s Player of the Month for January after historic performances in Pakistan

West Indies spinner Jomel Warrican has been named the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for January, marking his first-ever win of the prestigious award.

The 32-year-old left-arm spinner earned the recognition after a series of exceptional wicket-taking performances in Pakistan, where he played a pivotal role in helping the West Indies secure their first Test victory in the country since 1990.

Warrican’s brilliant form saw him take 19 wickets in just two Test matches, with an astonishing average of only 9 runs per wicket. Despite Pakistan winning the first match, Warrican was outstanding, claiming ten wickets in spin-friendly conditions in Multan. His impressive figures included a 3/69 performance in the first innings, followed by a career-best 7/32 in the second innings, where he was involved in all but one of Pakistan’s wickets to fall. The spell demonstrated his control and skill, as he played a major part in dismantling Pakistan’s batting lineup.

In the second Test, Warrican’s brilliance continued both with the ball and with the bat. Coming to the crease with the Windies at a precarious 95 for 9 in the first innings, he struck a vital 36 not out. Alongside Kemar Roach, he helped the visitors recover to reach a more respectable total of 163 all out, thwarting Pakistan’s early dominance.

His all-round contributions did not stop there; in the second innings, he took figures of 4/43 and 5/27, while also adding another 18 crucial runs. His performances were central to the West Indies’ historic 120-run victory in the Test series, earning him the Player of the Series accolade.

The result marks the first time a West Indian player has won the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award since fellow spinner Gudakesh Motie claimed the honor in May 2024.

In addition to Warrican’s triumph, the ICC Women’s Player of the Month for January was awarded to Beth Mooney of Australia. Mooney was recognized for her key role in Australia’s dominant Ashes success against England.
