Opposition criticizes government for its decision to import ice
The opposition People’s National Party (PNP) has criticized the government for its decision to import ice.
In December last year, the Industry Ministry confirmed that approval was given for the importation of ice for six months.
It said this is being done to maintain supply following a fire in November that caused extensive property damage at Pure National Limited which is the country’s primary manufacturer of ice.
Industry Minister Aubyn Hill explained that the measure was necessary to ensure adequate supply for the festive season while also supporting key sectors such as food and beverage and tourism.
Speaking at the presentation of Danishka Williams as the PNP’s candidate for South West St. Ann in Cave Valley on Sunday night, the party’s General Secretary, Dr. Dayton Campbell criticized the move.
He suggested that the importation of ice is a result of the government’s failure to build local industries.
In the meantime, Dr. Campbell, who is also the Opposition Spokesman on Agriculture reiterated that the government must invest more in local farmers.
