Matthews’ century and Dottin’s firepower lead West Indies Women to dominant 9-Wicket victory over Bangladesh

A stunning century from captain Hayley Matthews and a brilliant all-round performance from Deandra Dottin powered the West Indies Women to a commanding 9-wicket win over Bangladesh in the opening match of their three-match One-Day International series at Warner Park on Sunday.

Matthews was named Player of the Match after her remarkable knock of 104 not out off just 79 balls, which helped the Windies chase down Bangladesh’s total of 198 with ease. The West Indies reached their target of 199 in just 31.4 overs, finishing with a commanding score of 202 for 1 with 110 balls to spare.

The day began with Bangladesh batting first after being put in by the West Indies. They struggled to build partnerships, finishing with 198 for 9 in their allotted 50 overs. Sharmin Akhter was the lone standout for the visitors, top-scoring with 42 runs. However, the Bangladesh innings was effectively dismantled by the West Indies bowlers. Deandra Dottin was the standout performer, taking 3 wickets for 40 runs, while Matthews and Aaliyah Alleyne also contributed with two wickets apiece.

In response, Matthews took charge alongside Qiana Joseph, who also played a fiery knock. The pair put together a stunning 163-run opening partnership, with Matthews leading the charge. Joseph, who scored a solid 70 runs off 79 balls, played a key supporting role before being dismissed. Matthews, however, continued her onslaught, racing to her century and finishing unbeaten, supported by Shemaine Campbell, who remained not out on 14.

The West Indies Women’s dominant victory puts them 1-0 up in the series and leaves Bangladesh with a tough task ahead. With automatic qualification for the 2025 Women’s Cricket World Cup at stake, the visitors will need to win the next two matches to secure a direct spot in the tournament.

The second ODI is set to take place on Tuesday, with seeking to take an unassailable 2-0 lead and Bangladesh hoping to bounce back and keep their World Cup hopes alive.
