INDECOM says number of people killed by the security forces in 2024 is the highest in the last ten years
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has reported that this morning’s fatal shooting incident in St. James has brought the total number of deaths from such incidents involving the security forces to 183.
Three men were killed in the incident, which occurred in Orange, St. James.
Assistant Commissioner of INDECOM, Hamish Campbell, noted that the number of people killed by the security forces this year is the highest in the past decade.
He stated that the number of fatalities has been rising annually since 2019 when over 80 people were killed by the security forces.
Assistant Commissioner Campbell once again called for the implementation of body-worn cameras, particularly during targeted operations.
According to INDECOM, preliminary reports from the police indicate that the Area One Fugitive Apprehension Team went to a premises with a warrant in search of a named individual.
It is alleged that as the officers approached, three men opened fire on them.
The officers reportedly returned fire, resulting in the deaths of the three men. Three firearms were subsequently recovered from the scene.
