Police are working with local and international law enforcement agencies to identify those responsible for the illicit shipment of guns, gun components and ammunition discovered at a wharf in Kingston yesterday.

A joint operation involving the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division (FNID) and the Jamaica Customs Agency’s Contraband Enforcement Team resulted in the seizure of the illicit items yesterday.

The shipment, which originated from the United States, consisted of five barrels that were declared as containing grocery and clothing items.

Upon inspection, a large quantity of illegal firearms and ammunition, including three fully assembled firearms and various component parts such as pistol slides, rifle barrels and magazines were found in the shipment.

Police say from preliminary assessment, the component parts can assemble an additional thirty-nine pistols and one rifle.

Additionally, assorted ammunition totaling 2,819 rounds were also discovered among the seized items.

Head of the FNID, Senior Superintendent Samuel Blake, said the seizure is a significant blow to criminal organizations operating in Jamaica.

He said the find is a testament to the effectiveness of collaboration between local law enforcement agencies in disrupting the flow of illegal firearms and ammunition into Jamaica.

SSP Blake added that the discovery comes at a critical time, just before the Christmas season.

Meantime, Minister of National Security, Dr. Horace Chang has commended the collaborative efforts of the Customs Agency, the security forces and international partners for their swift response in the recovery of the firearms, gun components, and ammunition.

Dr. Chang further warned persons intent on trafficking guns to Jamaica through the ports that they will be found and will experience the full force of the law.
