Kingston College vs St. Catherine High in 2024 ISSA Manning Cup final
It will be Kingston vs St. Catherine when Kingston College plays St. Catherine High in the 2024 ISSA Manning Cup final.
The match-up was etched in stone after both teams recorded contrasting semifinal victories at the National Stadium on Tuesday.
Kingston College, chasing a 17th title, made progress after notching a 2-0 win over beaten 2023 finalists Hydel courtesy of Matrim Martin who scored in the 15th and 91st minutes.
It saw the North Street based school gaining revenge of Hydel who eliminated them at this stage of the competition in 2023 to remain on course for a first title since 2021
St. Catherine High, meanwhile, had earlier became the first team to advance after beating many time winners Jamaica College 5-4 on penalties in semifinal one after both teams had battled to a 1-1 draw in regulation and stoppage time.
The Anthony Patrick coached St. Catherine High went ahead through Romaine Walters who converted from the penalty spot after 12 minutes but Nashordo Gibbs leveled for Jamaica College four minutes before the halftime break.
With neither team able to find a winner, penalties were needed to separate the teams. The winning spot kick was scored by Kadean Young after Jahmarley Bennett saw his shot come crashing off the upright with the scores tied at 4-4.
The 5-4 result sends a jubilant St. Catherine High into Friday’s final at the National Stadium where victory would see them becoming the just second team outside Kingston & St. Andrew to win the ISSA Manning Cup title. The first and only school to accomplish that feat are Bridgeport High who won in 2001 and in 2006 while they were incidentally coached by Anthony Patrick, now in charge at St. Catherine.
The Manning Cup final will be preceded by the Walker Cup KO final between Mona High and Excelsior High.
