Jamaica will honor commitment to deploy more security personnel to Haiti—Johnson Smith
The government has sought to assure that it will honor its commitment to deploy additional members of the security forces to Haiti.
Last month, a 24-member squad was sent to Haiti after Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced that it was being deployed in support of the multinational security efforts in that country.
He said other security personnel are expected to follow at a later date.
Foreign Affairs Minister Kamina Johnson Smith gave an update on the matter during a Post Cabinet Press Conference this morning.
Last week, some 70 Haitians including children were killed by gang members in Pont-Sonde.
Scores of others were wounded.
Vehicles and buildings were also set ablaze.
Noting that security remains an issue in Haiti, Mrs. Johnson Smith said Jamaica continues to advocate for international support for the French speaking country.
Meantime, she said since the establishment of the transitional presidential council in Haiti, that country’s political situation has improved.
Mrs. Johnson Smith said the country could soon be able to hold elections.
