Hurricane Beryl was a call to action -PM Holness
Prime Minister Andrew Holness says the impact of Hurricane Beryl was a call to action and a stark reminder of the importance of preparedness.
Noting that Beryl was a test, Mr. Holness says Jamaica performed credibly but there is room for improvement.
As part of the country’s response, the Prime Minister announced the establishment of the Disaster Risk Management Review Committee (DRMRC) this morning.
It will evaluate the country’s disaster preparedness across various sectors, identify vulnerabilities and recommend improvements.
The aim of the Committee is to build a culture of resilience that prepares the country for the future.
Mr. Holness said when compared to previous years, Jamaica did better at responding to the hurricane, but focus should be placed on filling the gaps in the country’s disaster response framework.
He cited as an example, the need to strengthen the nation’s water system, so that it is not dependent on Jamaica’s only electricity provider to operate.
