The lives of several commuters were disrupted this morning after residents in St. Mary and Portland mounted roadblocks to register their frustration over a lack of electricity. 

Roadways in Windsor Castle in Portland as well as Annotto Bay and the Junction main road in St. Mary were impacted by the blockades. 

The residents are upset that despite Hurricane Beryl’s passage more than two weeks ago, the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) has not restored power to their homes.

Members of the security forces and the Jamaica Fire Brigade have cleared the blockades. 

Member of Parliament for Southeast St. Mary, Dr. Norman Dunn said after assuring residents that efforts are underway to restore power, some of them assisted in clearing the Junction main road in his constituency. 

He expressed hope that the JPS  will improve the pace of restoration in the communities. 

This morning’s protests in St. Mary and Portland are the latest in a series of demonstrations across the country, as Jamaicans are mounting pressure for power to be restored to their communities.
