With the second phase of the plastic ban set to come into effect tomorrow June 1, the National Environment and Planning Agency, NEPA says nearly 50 entities have been brought before the courts through the enforcement of the first phase of the ban.

Under phase one which commenced in January 2019 the importation, distribution, manufacture, and use of some commercial single-use plastic bags of dimensions, plastic drinking straws, and  polystyrene foam are banned.

Speaking with Irie FM News, NEPA’s Director of Environmental Management and Conservation  Anthony McKenzie, said while there has been an almost 90 per cent compliance, nearly 50 entities were prosecuted for breaches of the ban.

He said among areas of breaches which continue to be a cause for concern is Coronation Market in Downtown Kingston.

Phase 2 of the ban will be on plastic lunch boxes and personal care products such as skin creams with microplastic beads.

Mr. Mckenzie said a public education campaign will be done about this aspect of the ban.
