JFJ says appointment of acting DPP should not delay installment of permanent DPP

Human rights lobby group Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ) says the appointment of an acting Director of Public Prosecutions, (DPP) should not delay the installment of a permanent personnel in the post.

Yesterday, the Justice Ministry named Senior Deputy (DPP) Claudette Thompson as the acting Director of Public Prosecutions.

It follows a ruling by the constitutional court last Friday, that the second extension of the tenure of former DPP, Paula Llewellyn, was unconstitutional.

While welcoming news of Ms. Thompson’s appointment, JFJ’s Executive Director Mickel Jackson said a permanent appointment must be made.

She said the appointment of an acting DPP, should not hinder the Public Service Commission, from recommending a permanent DPP.
