The Praedial Larceny Prevention Unit in the Ministry of Agriculture has signalled its intention to expand the cattle tagging system to other animals, as part of efforts to reduce animal theft. 

Since 2021, under the National Animal Identification and Traceability System (NAITS), all cattle are required to have ear tags and corresponding passports. 

Speaking with Irie FM News, Head of the unit, Oral Pascoe, says efforts will be made this year to implement a similar system for other animals, such as goats.

He notes, however, that the system’s expansion cannot be undertaken if Jamaican farmers do not reach the 95% threshold for tagging cattle.
