Fishers being trained in utilization of fish aggregating devices and long-line fishing techniques -Green
Fishers in several communities across the country are being trained in the utilization of fish aggregation devices and deep-line fishing techniques.
Fisheries Minister, Floyd Green said the training is in response to the decline in nearshore fishing, as Jamaica’s fish population trends downward.
He stressed that the country’s fish population needs to be replenished.
Mr Green explained that in the interim, fishers will be urged to go further from the shore, which hopefully, will result in better catches.
Mr Green also outlined that the Ministry will be training artisanal fishers in deep, or long-line fishing to ease the burden on fish stock near shore.
Mr. Green was speaking at a food stakeholder engagement session in Hayes, Clarendon.
