INDECOM probing shooting death of alleged intruder by off-duty policeman
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) is probing an incident in which a 29-year-old man was fatally shot, allegedly by an off-duty policeman, in Kingston, last night.
Stephon Powell was shot dead, at a house on Colleyville Avenue, in Kingston 20.
In a statement, INDECOM said it was informed that the off-duty police officer was at a home with a woman, when Powell, who was known by the female occupant of the house, allegedly entered the property by force.
INDECOM said it responded to the incident and processed the scene and the service firearm assigned to the off-duty officer.
It completed witness canvassing and photographed the body of the deceased.
The commission said a ratchet knife, which was recovered from the scene, is alleged to have been in the possession of Mr. Powell.
It noted that during the initial scene response, the concerned officer declined to provide an initial account to INDECOM investigators.
He was subsequently issued with a notice to provide a statement and attend the office of the commission to be interviewed.
INDECOM added that its enquiry is still at an early stage of establishing facts and it will seek to ascertain the full circumstances of this incident resulting in the discharge of the officer’s firearm and the death of Powell.
