Haitians arrive in Portland by boat
A group of 37 Haitians arrived on the shores of the Boston Beach, in Portland, this afternoon (July 10).
Reports are that the group consists of 24 men, five women, five boys and three girls.
They arrived at the Boston Beach at approximately 1:40 PM.
Head of the Portland police, Superintendent Lloyd Darby says the individuals appear to be in good health and were assisted by residents who offered them food.
The individuals are reportedly from an area in Haiti known as Jeremie.
Haiti has been facing political instability and civil unrest for several months, prompting citizens of the nation to attempt to flee.
Just last week, regional leaders at a CARICOM conference, stressed the need for global multi-national security support to restore peace and stability in Haiti.
