Criminologist calls for urgent response to crime says country could reach Haiti situation
Criminologist Dr Jason Mckay says Jamaica needs a dramatic and urgent response to crime, if it is to avoid falling into a situation similar to Haiti; which is under siege by organized gangs.
He suggests that among the measures that could be considered, is enlisting everyone with a licensed firearm, into a reserve security unit.
Speaking during the Asis Jamaica chapter forum, Dr Mckay noted that already, the gangs are showing signs of not being overly concerned about law enforcement.
He cited as examples, the recent robberies at automated banking machines, and attacks in the vicinity of police stations.
He called for the creation of an auxiliary armed force.
