Member of parliament for western St Mary Robert Montague says Jamaica should resume the use of the death penalty.

This includes, hanging, shooting and electrocution.

The last person executed in Jamaica was Nathan Foster, who was convicted of murder and hanged in 1988.

Speaking in parliament on , Mr Montague outlined the high number of murders committed in the country.

He said the decision to stop hanging created a murder factory.

Mr Montague said if Jamaica does not wish to use hanging as a penalty, it should be removed from the law books.

He said murderers should not benefit from the taxes of hard working and law abiding people.

Mr Montague was making his contribution to the debate on the new firearms legislation. The legislation, which will implement tougher penalties for gun crimes, was passed with full support from the opposition.
