11 cases classified as suspected leptospirosis

The Health and Wellness Ministry says eleven cases have been classified as suspected leptospirosis cases since the passage of Hurricane Melissa.

The disclosure was made by Principal Medical Officer and National Epidemiologist, Dr. Karen Wester-Kerr during a virtual briefing today.

She said these cases are in St. James, Hanover, St. Elizabeth and St Ann.

Meanwhile, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jacquiline Bisasor-Mckenzie is reminding persons that leptospirosis is caused by exposure to the urine or body fluid of infected animals.

Dr. Bisasor-Mckenzie said most of the time, leptospirosis is a mild, flu-like illness. However, some cases are more severe.
