World Boxing President Boris van der Vorst to visit Jamaica on four-day official Trip
Boris van der Vorst, president of World Boxing, will begin his official visit to Jamaica this Saturday, March 29, arriving at the Donald Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay.
The four-day visit will run until Tuesday, April 2, providing the 53 year old Dutchman a unique opportunity to engage with Jamaica’s boxing community and experience the island’s rich cultural heritage.
During his visit, van der Vorst will have the chance to observe Jamaica’s boxing talent in action, with a visit to the JBA’s gym in Montego Bay, where local athletes showcase their skills. He will also gain insight into the development of the island’s schools’ boxing programme, which is currently being rolled out at St. Andrew Technical High School in Kingston.
In addition to his boxing-related engagements, van der Vorst will explore some of Jamaica’s cultural landmarks to experience the island’s warmth, beauty, and world-famous cuisine. His visit will also include discussions with key stakeholders from the sports and boxing communities aimed at strengthening and supporting the continued growth of boxing in Jamaica.
Stephen “Bomber” Jones, president of the Jamaica Boxing Association, expressed his enthusiasm for van der Vorst’s visit, which will mark the first time a president of World Boxing has come to Jamaica. “It’s a really big deal, especially with boxing now officially included in the 2028 Olympic Games,” said Jones. “We’ve been putting in the work here, from grassroots level up to elite athletes, and we’re proud that Jamaica is contributing significantly to boxing development across the Caribbean. This visit gives us a chance to showcase what we’re building and hopefully gain the president’s endorsement for the continued growth of boxing on the island.”
